Yellowstone Snowcoaches

Follow the Firehole River on skis or snowshoes during this five mile round trip adventure to the popular Lone Star Geyser. Take your time on the easiest trail as the interpretive guide skis between groups offering commentary and answering questions. A drink and snack are included at the end of the day. A small backpack for water, extra snacks, and extra clothing is recommended.

Travel south from Snow Lodge and journey to West Thub Geyser Basin. Traversing Craig Pass, we’ll cross the Continental Divide into, and then back out of, Pacific Ocean drainage on our way to Yellowstone Lake, where we’ll walk around the West Thumb Geyser Basin, taking in such notable features as Abyss Pool, Black Pool, the Fishing Cone, and Lakeshore Geyser.

The 7-mile corridor that parallels the Madison River west of Madison Junction will be the focal point of this search for wildlife in their winter habitat. Many species of birds and mammals winter along this scenic route and you never know what you might see.

A journey along Yellowstone’s Firehole River can reward you with spectacular scenery, wildlife watching and an increased admiration for what the early visitors and military personnel enjoyed and endured. While the snowcoaches are heated, sightseeing stops, where passengers leave the coach, necessitate warm footwear and warm layered clothing.

This narrated sightseeing tour to the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone departs the Snow Lodge and follows the road north from Old Faithful through the Upper and Lower Geyser Basins to Madison Junction, where a brief stop is made. The tour continues north along the Gibbon River through excellent elk and bison habitat, following the road east from Norris to Canyon. Spend up to 2 wonderful hours at the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Depending on the weather and road conditions, time and conditions permitting, the tour may visit Hayden Valley before returning to Old Faithful Snow Lodge at 6:00pm via the west side of the park.

Looking for a full day ski tour? The Canyon Ski Tour is for you. You will travel by snowcoach for two hours, arriving at the Canyon Area with opportunities for viewing wildlife along the way. Here you will ski with an interpretive guide, along the extremely picturesque Canyon rim, viewing the Upper and the Lower Falls of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River. By the end of the day, you will have skied up to six miles. This tour does not travel the full lower loop. Your lunch, a drink, and snack are included. Your level of skiing should be at minimum – advanced beginner.

Leaving right from the Old Faithful Snow Lodge, this highly interpretive tour will take you off into the backcountry. You will get to walk through forests and along the Firehole river. Level of difficulty is easy to moderate. Skis/snowshoe rentals are not included in the price, but are available to rent at the Bear Den Ski Shop.

The ski shuttle departs the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel for the Indian Creek Cross Country Ski Area three times a day. Once the skiers are dropped off, the driver returns to the Mammoth to pick up the next group of skiers. It is suggested that skiers bring a lunch. Guests have the option to either ride the shuttle back to the Mammoth Hot Springs or ski back as there is a ski trail that connects Mammoth Hot Springs Village and Indian Creek. However, this connecting trail is only for experienced skiers in excellent physical condition. Guests taking the 1:30pm skier shuttle MUST ski back to Mammoth Hot Springs as there will be no pick-up after 3pm.

The Old Faithful area (elev. 7350 ft.) offers about 70 miles of cross country ski trails, beginning right out the front door of your lodge. Many of these trails provide access to the unique thermal features in the area where bison, elk and other animals take advantage of the warm ground.  For a full day adventure, hop on one of our ski shuttles to explore some of the off the beaten path ski trails around Fairy Falls, Lone Star Geyser Basin, or Biscuit Basin. Please talk to the Ski Shop about current conditions before heading out.
