The Izaak Walton Inn is a unique family-owned retreat that borders the southern boundary of Glacier National Park. The Izaak Walton Inn is located about mid-way between East and West Glacier, right off Highway 2 near the town of Essex, Montana.
The Izaak Walton Inn is a wonderfully unique lodge built with the same Swiss-style theme that many of the lodges of Glacier National Park feature. Izaak Walton Inn carries a rich history that is closely tied to both Glacier National Park and the Great Northern Railway.
The lodge was originally built in 1939 to serve as accommodations for railroad service personnel and to serve as a resort for tourists arriving at Glacier Park by train.
In the early 1940s plans were in place to add a new entrance into Glacier Park at the midpoint between West and East Glacier, and Izaak Walton Inn was going to be the primary resort lodging option for this mid-point park gate. However before construction began on this new gateway into the park, World War 2 started and by the time the war had ended interest in building this new park entrance had dwindled.

The Empire Builder Rooms feature beautiful wood panel walls and a unique Great Northern Railway theme that features the brand logo and colors. Each room includes a private bath and a queen bed. Select rooms can accommodate a 3rd person with a futon (available by request). These rooms either face trackside, or non-trackside.

The Great Northern Rooms are located on the first floor of the lodge and include a queen bed, a twin bed, and a private bathroom. These rooms are decorated with a traditional country inn theme. These rooms are facing either trackside or non-trackside and accessible rooms are available.

The School House Rooms was built-in 2018. These rooms overlook the inn and offer a king bed, small kitchenette, deck, and a private bathroom with a walk-in shower and claw foot tub. WiFi is available in the rooms. Television, telephone, and air conditioning are not available.

The Empire Builder Family Suites are decorated in the same American Railway theme as the regular Empire Builder Rooms, but the family suites provide much more space for families to spread out and relax. The family suites include two separate sleeping areas with an arrangement of two queen beds, a twin bed, and a twin futon. These suites are only on the trackside of the property.

Four authentic old cabooses that used to run on the Great Northern rail tracks have been set aside in a peaceful spot in the forest overlooking the main lodge. These cabooses have been fully restored and renovated into cozy cabin-style accommodations which are unique and fun for the entire family! Each caboose has been fitted with electricity and plumbing so you will have the availability of life's modern conveniences at your disposal. The bedding differs by the cabin. Bedding options include two full beds, one full bed, or one queen and two twin beds (sleeping 2-4 guests depending on the bedding arrangement). All Cabooses require a two-night minimum. Rates include the use of the sauna, skiing, and hiking trails. Please note in the comments if you prefer one bed.

This is not your typical locomotive! The GN441 has been immaculately renovated into a luxury lodging suite. While the exterior of this old locomotive still looks much the same as it did back in the days when it was rolling down the track, the interior has been carefully reconstructed with luxury furnishings and fixtures unsurpassed by any other lodging options anywhere in the Glacier Park area. The bedroom offers style and comfort with a king-size bed complete with a Hudson Bay blanket and pillowcases. There is also a stone fireplace, a full kitchen, and a private bathroom (with a jacuzzi tub). These require a two-night minimum.

The Great Northern X215 Caboose is the newest addition to the list of accommodations at Izaak Walton Inn. This beautifully renovated caboose has been redesigned with luxury in mind. There is a king bed in the master bedroom on the main floor, a full bed in the cupola, as well as a gas fireplace, to chase away the chill and set a romantic mood. The caboose includes a private bathroom and a full kitchen with a 4-burner stove, oven, refrigerator, microwave, granite countertops, and a coffee maker. There is also a basic set of dishes and cooking equipment. This accommodation requires a two-night minimum.

The 'JJ' was designed with a rustic western theme that combines wood, leather, and stone to create a warm and inviting Montana-lodge atmosphere. Rustic reclaimed barn wood and turquoise aspen wood accent the walls and blend perfectly with the leather and western-themed furniture. The kitchen features Lotus granite countertops, a copper sink, a full refrigerator, gas range, microwave, and a sink. A queen bed in the master bedroom and a full bed in the cupola. The Northern Pacific Bay Window Caboose is another recent addition to the accommodations available at Izaak Walton Inn. This beautifully renovated caboose has a queen size bed in the master bedroom and two sets of bunk beds in the second bedroom. The caboose will easily sleep up to 6 people in comfort. The master bedroom includes a gas fireplace and there is a full kitchen with stove, oven, refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker, and a luxury bathroom with a tiled shower. This is a great option for families or a group of friends traveling together. This accommodation requires a two-night minimum.

The Family Cabins at Izaak Walton is located across the tracks, situated in a nice quiet spot in the forest. The cabins include a kitchenette/living area, a bedroom, a private bathroom, and a small loft. The bedroom and the loft each have a full-size bed. Each cabin also includes a front deck with bench seating, the perfect place to relax during the day and soak in the sights, sounds, and scents of the forest. The cabins will accommodate four guests maximum. There is a two-night minimum required for these accommodations.

The Walton House features three bedrooms and two bathrooms that are located just a short distance from the Izaak Walton Inn. The second level of the home offers a guest room with a trundle bed with two twin-size mattresses, a bathroom, and the master bedroom with a queen bed. The James J Hill House is a newly renovated three-bedroom, two-bathroom home within walking distance of the inn and restaurant. The main floor features a balcony, full bathroom tub/shower combo, kitchen, dining area, and living room. The lower level features the third bedroom with two twin over queen bunk beds. The upstairs features a bathroom with a shower only, the first bedroom has a queen, the second bedroom has a twin over queen bunk bed. This home requires a two-night minimum for each reservation, a non-refundable cleaning fee of $75.00 for each reservation, and can accommodate up to ten guests (note: there is an extra charge for more than 8 guests).

A deposit equal to one nights stay is required at the time of booking. The remaining balance is due 30 days prior to arrival.
If cancellation is prior to 30 days of the arrival date, then the reservation is refundable. Less than 30 days, the total amount paid is non-refundable. Reservation cancellations or changes received less than 30 days before arrival for any reason are non-refundable.
Pets Policy:
Pets are allowed in some accommodations. Dogs are allowed in our cabins and classic cabooses with a mandatory pet fee.
Rates Policy: Rates for cabooses are based on double occupancy. Family cabin rates are based on 2-3 adults plus children. Room rates include the use of the sauna, ski, and hiking trails. Rates are subject to change or increase depending on availability and season. Please note there is an additional $1.00 Glacier Park Conservancy Fee and a 3% resort fee before tax. Please note there is a two or three-night minimum stay required in peak season. There is a two-night minimum for caboose rentals. Rollaway beds are not available.
