![]() In 1927, the Grand Discovery Air Tour was first flown over the Grand Canyon, and the people saw the aerial picture of this incredible canyon while aboard a Stinson Detroiter airplane. Since then, the Grand Discovery Air Tour has become one of the most popular air tours at Grand Canyon. Flown by Grand Canyon Airlines, this tour allows it's passengers to see the Grand Canyon in a way that most people never will during their entire lifetime. Here at Grand Canyon Airlines, we are pleased to continue this tradition into the new millennium.
Below, you can see the map of the route on which our tour will take you. As you can see, our tour covers the most beautiful and therefore the most famous parts of the Canyon. Whether you are by yourself, with your family, or with a large group, our tour is perfect for you. There are frequent departures throughout the day, and they all leave from the Grand Canyon National Park Airport, located just outside the entrance to the south rim, at the town of Tusayan, Arizona.
From the airport, your tour takes off due east, while crossing Zuni Point and heading through the Zuni Corridor. As we follow the gorgeous Colorado River, you can see famous sights such as the Painted Desert, Desert View, and the Navajo Indian Reservation. You will also see what many consider to be one of the highlights of this trip, a section of the Colorado River named “Confluence.” Located just below Cape Solitude, this is the area where the Colorado River and the Little Colorado River join together.
Continuing on, the aircraft will then turn toward the north rim, and while crossing Temple Butte, you will view incredible sections of the Kaibab National Forest and the Kaibab Plateau. Flying straight west, toward the Dragon Head, you will be rewarded with a great view of the highest point on the north rim, known as Point Imperial. Commonly you will see a variety of wildlife on the north rim, such as antelope, deer, and elk. At this point, we now begin to head back toward the south rim via the Dragon Corridor, while flying over the deepest part of the Canyon. As we get closer to the south rim, we will then fly around the Hermit's Rest area just before we return to the Grand Canyon National Park Airport.
Designed to entertain and to provide interpretation for our clients, our tours are narrated digitally in several different languages. Offered in our world-famous Vistaliner aircraft, the Grand Discovery Tour is the perfect tour for those looking to get the most out of their dollar while seeing as much as possible of the great Grand Canyon.
